Kia Motors Slovakia has successfully launched series production of the plug‑in hybrid version of the XCeed model. Production of the new electrified model follows just a few months after the start of production of the Ceed Sportswagon PHEV and represents another step in Kia’s strategy of gradual electrification. With the introduction of these models, Kia is bringing electrified powertrains to the compact family car segment for the first time.
“These two models represent another important milestone for Kia as we introduce next‑generation modern powertrains across our broader vehicle lineup. Sales of the Ceed model range increased year‑on‑year by 46% in 2019, and the new electrified variants will further enhance its appeal,” said Emilio Herrera, Chief Operating Officer of Kia Motors Europe.
The Kia XCeed Plug‑in Hybrid and Ceed Sportswagon Plug‑in Hybrid are produced exclusively at Kia’s only European manufacturing plant, located in Teplička nad Váhom, Slovakia. Both models are covered by Kia’s standard 7‑year warranty, extended to include the battery and the new powertrain.
The Kia XCeed and Ceed Sportswagon plug‑in hybrids offer an alternative to conventional engines. The new powertrain combines an 8.9 kWh lithium‑polymer battery, a 44.5 kW electric motor, and an efficient 1.6‑liter four‑cylinder gasoline direct‑injection (GDI) engine. The total system output is 141 horsepower with 265 Nm of torque. The Ceed Sportswagon PHEV can travel up to 60 kilometers with zero emissions, while the XCeed PHEV offers an all‑electric range of 58 kilometers.
Both models are equipped with a new virtual engine sound system—an acoustic warning system that operates only in electric mode at low speeds and when reversing. The system generates audible signals to reliably alert pedestrians to the vehicle’s presence, thereby enhancing safety.
The Kia XCeed PHEV will go on sale across Europe in the second quarter of 2020.
