Implementation of Environmental Management System at Kia Motors Slovakia

Generally, implementation of an Environmental Management System (EMS) according to the international standard ISO 14001:2004 is a world global trend. The main objective is to describe and manage the impacts, which an organisation has on the environment with a view to achieve balance between environmental protection and socio-economic needs of the society.

Implementation of EMS will help Kia Motors Slovakia acquire an overview of possible dangers resulting from environmental accidents and lower the risk of non-compliance, while the resulting sanctions and fines will be reduced. The aim of implementation of EMS is also to raise the environmental awareness of all employees and in addition to improve the image of our organisation.

The starting point for EMS implementation is the preparation of Environmental policy. Inside the plant, introduction of EMS placed great emphasis on compliance with defined procedures and working standards in line with environment regulations and the general principles of ambient air pollution, water protection and waste treatment.

Kia Motors Slovakia appointed a specialized company, EKOCONSULT-enviro, as a leading consultancy company for EMS implementation. The process of implementation cannot concentrate only on the preparation of documentation, it also has to place great emphasis on practical use of EMS, such as safe handling of chemicals, their storage or proper waste separation.

The whole process of EMS introduction was scheduled for nine months and resulted in a certification by an accredited organisation DNV Slovakia, which will issue an internationally valid and recognized certificate to Kia Motors Slovakia by the end of 2007. Kia Motors Slovakia is aware of its impacts on the environment and tries to limit them as much as possible. At the same time Kia Motors Slovakia commits to develop and improve these activities in the future.
